Bumpus and their powerful brand of soul music channels the uplifting energy of Sly & the Family Stone, the energy of James Brown and the reflective cool of Marvin Gaye. Led by singers James Johnston, Ava Fain and Tina Howell, they bring together funky big beats, deep bass, lush JB Horns and a heavy organ sound that results in a high-octane musical funk frenzy.

Nettelpalooza is a benefit concert for Nettelhorst Elementary School, a CPS Magnet Cluster School and one of the first CPS community schools in Chicago. Since 1892 the red brick building in East Lakeview has served as one of the finest public elementary schools in the city. Over the last decade a consortium of concerned parents has worked with the school along with local businesses and artists to transform the landmark building into a visually stimulating and vibrant space and environment in which to explore, grow, and learn.

Nettelhorst is often cited in the media as an example of innovation and renewal in urban public schools. The school has been featured on CBS, PBS, NPR, 60 Minutes, Chicago magazine, and The New York Times as well as many Chicago papers. The innovation goes beyond academic changes – we have partnered with the Chicago Blackhawks for a Health and Wellness Initiative and with Nate Berkus, Oprah's designer, to remodel a community space.
